Players and support staff were left shell-shocked and demoralised when Group 2's senior representative team was humbled 76-14 by the southern neighbours from Group 3 at Laurieton Oval on Saturday. Believed to be the heaviest defeat suffered in the 103-year history of domestic rugby league, Group 2 management now have serious decisions to make in coming months to restore the region's former reputation for excellence.

WARL - Another Close One to North Beach - Kalamunda Bulldogs' unbeaten start to the Harvey Norman Premiership was stopped with another good finish by North Beach Sea Eagles. The Sea Eagles won 24 to 20 after holding out the Bulldogs in a scoreless final 20 minutes of the game. There were some critical errors and penalties near the end that could have made a difference for either side, but the intensity of play and aggression at the ball was a treat for fans. Both coaches agreed the outcome could have gone either way, but the closeness of the game was a true indication of the competition.

Toyota Cowboys forward Tariq Sims faces another extended stint on the sidelines after X-Rays late last night confirmed he has again fractured the tibia and fibula in his left leg. Sims will have surgery in Townsville early this week after suffering the injury in a collision with Penrith's Cameron Ciraldo in the second half of last night's 30-28 victory by North Queensland at Dairy Farmers Stadium.

The 21-year-old cleared the posts from 35 metres two minutes into the extra period to clinch a third successive win for Michael Maguire's side.

He's already been the world's best halfback, but Queensland teammate Justin Hodges believes Johnathan Thurston is destined to end his career as one of league's great five-eighths. The winner of three Dally M halfback of the year medals and voted the game's best player in 2007, 29-year-old Thurston made a smooth transition to five-eighth for Australia in last month's Auckland test, replacing retired great Darren Lockyer.
